The Fair Music Platform
Decentralized Streaming for a Fairer Music Ecosystem
The Fair Music Platform is designed to ensure that everyone involved in creating great music is paid fairly—according to the true value they contribute. We believe this can spark a revolution in the global music industry, providing creators with the resources they need to make a living from their work and continue producing the music we love. In addition, it will encourage the seamless sharing of cultural expressions, both locally and globally.
The Fair Music Platform (FMP) is an initiative of the International Music Council—the world’s largest network of music organizations and institutions—and is powered by New Internet Media, in collaboration with professional creators’ organizations worldwide.
This project is the result of years of dialogue, advocacy, and collaboration at national, European, and international levels—centered on the rights of music creators, with a special focus on fair remuneration and recognition.
Legal Considerations
and Stakeholder Consultations
Establishing a platform like Fair Music requires careful attention to legal, ethical, and economic factors. Given the complexity of these issues, the project team works closely with a group of legal experts led by Thibault Verbiest—a renowned authority in internet, AI, blockchain, fintech, and related legal domains. This collaboration aims to thoroughly examine all legal requirements and potential challenges involved in launching a transparent, future-proof streaming service that is fit for purpose.
The findings from this legal research, combined with insights from an extensive stakeholder consultation conducted in 2024, will form the foundation of the upcoming Fair Music streaming platform. This integrated approach ensures that the platform is not only innovative and forward-thinking, but also legally robust and fully compliant with relevant regulations.
